SWISS Boeing 777 diverts to Azores after pungent cabin odor

A SWISS Boeing 777-300ER, registration HB-JNF, operating flight LX9 from Chicago to Zurich, diverted to Lajes Airport on Terceira Island in the Azores on 25 August 2026 after an unidentified pungent odor was detected in the Economy Class cabin. The crew declared an emergency to receive priority from air traffic control. The aircraft landed safely at 06:30 local time. Five passengers and one cabin crew member were medically assessed after reporting eye irritation, nausea or headaches, with no further treatment required.
